Latest labeling trends


With the packaging industry changing so rapidly, fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) companies need to keep up to date with the latest in packaging innovations in order to stay ahead of the competition, whilst being seen to be actively working on their corporate social responsibility. Smart labels and flexible packaging, coding, safety prints, inks and finishing controls are the main factors to be considered by converters.

In recent years, there has been a trend in packaging to convert from a rigid to a flexible format, with the result that films and foils have been introduced to the market on an unprecedented scale. The flexible packaging industry has been relatively immune from global economic downturns, with the market valued at £45.38 billion in 2011, and growing by an estimated five percent each year.

Labelexpo Americas will launch specialized packaging master class for brand owners. Case studies will be illustrated from brands such as Procter & Gamble, Danone and Coca-Cola.

John Foley of interlinkONE and Grow Socially will look at connecting packaging and the web through engaging in social media. Mike Fairley from the Labelexpo Global Series will speak on new opportunities and solutions in high tech printing and finishing technologies.

The 2014 congress is the first co-organized by the two European associations, and takes place in Sorrento, Italy on September 17-20, will include presentations on Generation Y and its use of technology in all aspects of life, including interacting with brands and their packaging, and global food industry developments. Other topics will address the requirements of retail throughout the supply chain and the importance of design.

Design Awards, as part of a program designed to encourage students to take up a career in consumer packaging design. The 2014 Schools Starpack Packaging Design Awards program featured three design briefs that students in the UK school years 10, 11 and AS Level (aged 15-17) were tasked to come up with packaging to suit. The students that have won awards have been inspired by the recognition of their work by industry specialists. Consequently a number our students have gone on to become packaging designers.
